Hardwood Floor Repair & Maintenance
Your hardwood floors are an investment. Our repair and maintenance services are designed to protect that investment, fixing isolated damage and performing preventative care to keep your floors looking new for years.
Whether you have a few problem boards or just want to restore your floor’s original luster, we have the right service for you.
- “Screen and Recoat” (Buff & Coat): This is the single best maintenance service for your floor. Recommended every 3-5 years, this one-day process is a “tune-up” for your floor’s finish. We lightly abrade (or “screen”) the existing topcoat to remove light surface scratches and prepare it for a new coat. We then apply a fresh, durable layer of polyurethane, restoring the floor’s protection and sheen. This is not a full sanding and will not remove deep scratches or change the color.
- Plank Replacement: Have a few boards that are deeply gouged, cracked, or stained from pets or water? In many cases, we don’t need to refinish the entire room. Our experts can skillfully remove the damaged planks and weave in new, matching ones for a seamless repair.
- Water & Pet Stain Repair: Water damage and pet stains are the most common and damaging issues. We will assess the damage to see if it can be sanded out. If the stain has penetrated too deeply, we will recommend plank replacement to permanently remove the problem.
Repair & Maintenance: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a "Screen and Recoat" and how do I know if I need one?
A “Screen and Recoat” (or Buff & Coat) is a maintenance procedure. If your floors are in good shape overall but have lost their shine and have many small surface-level scratches, you are the perfect candidate. It’s a fast, one-day process that adds a new layer of protection before the damage gets bad enough to require a full, expensive refinish.
Can you fix deep scratches or pet stains?
- Deep Scratches: If a scratch is very deep and has gone through the stain into the raw wood, a “Screen and Recoat” will not fix it. The only options are to live with it, replace the plank, or do a full refinish.
- Pet Stains (Urine): These are tricky. The ammonia in pet urine turns the wood black and can penetrate very deeply. 99% of the time, these stains cannot be sanded out. The only proper solution is to remove and replace the affected planks.
Can you just refinish one room to match the others?
This is very difficult to do perfectly. Wood, stain, and finish all change color over time (a process called “ambering”). Even if we use the exact same stain and finish, a newly refinished room will almost never be a perfect 100% match to an older, adjoining floor. We can get it close, but we always recommend refinishing a continuous, open area at the same time for a uniform look.

Andy and crewmen went above and beyond to get the job done! Extremely professional! We highly recommend them to anyone who wants beautiful wood floors. We have original white oak from the 1940’s and Andy gave it new life once again.

May 2, 2024Andy and his crew did a great job for us. They installed new oak flooring in the entry, hall and den to match existing oak flooring in the living room, dining room and kitchen. They refinished the old, and finished the new, and they matched up seamlessly. We'd definitely recommend them. Michael and Letitia Thompson

June 19, 2025Love my new and refinished hardwood floors. Beautiful work from Northwest Hardwood Flooring. Andy and his crew did an awesome job matching new hardwood with existing hardwood, sanding and refinishing the main floor in our home. Andy has lived up to his excellent reviews. I would recommend Northwest Hardwood Flooring to anyone for beautiful hardwood floors, reasonable quote and a crew who cleans up after the job is completed. I didn't think to take a picture before putting back furniture so I could show how beautiful the flooring is.

February 24, 2024All of the rooms in our house had hardwood floors that needed to be refinished. Some were too dark, and the others were very worn. Andy and his crew did a professional job of restoring the floors, and they look beautiful. They finished in a timely manner, and the price was reasonable.

We have some experience as homeowners with hardwood and fir floor installers and refinishers, and these are the folks. Andy and Jake know their craft, have good suppliers, and they themselves with their associate Sam were the install crew. Beautiful work, on time, got just the wood we asked for at a good price, can't think of what could've gone better.

February 7, 2020What an all-around OUTSTANDING experience it was to work with Andy and his crew! They installed Brazilian Cherry flooring throughout nearly our entire home, and the floors are GORGEOUS. Our home is transformed. His knowledge of and experience with hardwood flooring is thorough, and he counseled us well throughout the entire process. We especially appreciated his advice on how & where to save money on this major project. Andy's team is 100% professional and their work is careful and meticulous. They were mindful of working inside our home, considerate of their surroundings and thoughtful of our pets too! They worked diligently and politely, and cleaned up beautifully after their work was completed. It was a pleasure to have this team of courteous, efficient, skilled artisans in our home. We wholeheartedly recommend Andy and Northwest Hardwood Flooring!
